Labour Party Chairman’s Home Engulfed in Mysterious Fire: Julius Abure and Family Unhurt

The home of the Labour Party, National Chairman, Julius Abure, was reportedly gutted by fire Wednesday night.

He and his family were unhurt. The course of the inferno yet to be determined.

But the LP has reacted, describing the inferno as a “mysterious fire”, and the family’s escape from the disaster as “divine intervention”.

The LP official spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement, disclosed that Abure’s home was engulfed by fire shortly after 1.00 AM while he and his family were asleep.

His residence was also gutted by a mysterious fire which started a few minutes after 1.00 AM while Abure and the members of his family were asleep,” the statement read.

Mr Ifoh added, “A member of the family who narrated the incident, the family was woken up by neighbours and security men living in the compound who raised the alarm.

The entire family were trapped as the inferno had reached the staircase making it impossible for Abure and family to escape.”

He said, however, neighbours and security men “gallantly pulled down one of the windows upstairs making ways for the family to escape”.

Abure himself has not spoken to the press but is said to have been promptly taken to a private hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

Abure’s leadership of the Labour Party has recently stirred controversy and opposition from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) – the labour movement that founded the party, which demanded his resignation and even proceeded to picket the party’s offices.

Despite the NLC’s objections, Abure was re-elected in the party’s national convention on March 27 held in Anambra State.

The NLC has refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the congress and has pressed for its annulment, and its popular presidential candidate in the last election, Gov. Peter Obi, has signalled he could dump the party if the crisis persisted.

Before then, tussel for the chairmanship position between Julius Abure and one Alhaji Lamidi Apapa had split the party into two factions.
