The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released its updated list of universities authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria.

The council warned prospective students, parents and guardians to confirm that a university has valid accreditation before applying to study law.

The CLE is the statutory body responsible for the professional and vocational training of people seeking to join the Nigerian legal profession.

In a public notice issued on Monday and dated August 14, 2026, the council said only universities it had accredited could admit students into the LL.B programme.

“The Council of Legal Education hereby informs the general public, prospective students, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria,” the notice said.

The council also warned universities against admitting law students without its approval.

It said institutions that breached the requirement could face sanctions under the rules governing legal education in Nigeria.

Moratorium Affects Three Institutions

The CLE said its published list was intended “for the guidance of the public” and would be reviewed periodically.

It also identified universities that had previously received accreditation but were under moratorium and could not admit new law students during specified academic sessions.

The institutions and applicable periods are:

  • Baze University, Abuja — three-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 sessions.
  • Lead City University, Ibadan — five-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2027/2028 sessions.
  • Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil — two-year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 sessions.

A moratorium is a temporary restriction that prevents an institution from admitting new students into a programme while regulatory concerns are addressed.

The CLE said the restrictions had been approved by its governing body as part of efforts to protect the standard of legal education.

Students Advised To Verify Status

Prospective students should confirm a university’s current accreditation status directly with the CLE before paying fees or accepting admission.

Admission into an unaccredited law programme may prevent a graduate from progressing to the Nigerian Law School and the professional qualification process.

The council’s notice is therefore particularly relevant to applicants choosing institutions for the 2026/2027 academic session.
