APC Alleges Killing of Campaign DG’s Nephew in Osun Two Days to Poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has alleged the killing of Dele Ayegbo, nephew of its governorship campaign Director-General, Wole Oke, in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area.

Ayegbo was reportedly shot dead on Wednesday night, two days to governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15.

APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi said Ayegbo was attacked at a junction close to his residence in Idofin area of Esa-Oke by suspected political thugs.

“The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has condemned the killing of the party’s governorship campaign Director-General, Wole Oke’s nephew, Dele Ayegbo, in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Council Area of the state on Wednesday night by the hit squad of the Accord Party who have been terrorising the members and supporters of the opposition APC across the state,” the statement reads.

“Information has it that Ayegbo was gunned down at the road junction close to his house at the Idofin quarters area of the ancient town by the Accord Party hoodlums who were riding in a car,” he added.

Party Claims Another Member Shot, Calls For Probe

The APC said another member was shot during the incident and taken to undisclosed hospital, while Ayegbo died at scene.

“The killing of the nephew of our campaign Director-general in Esa-Oke is one death too many which must be urgently unravelled by the police in the interest of fairness and justice,” Olabisi said.

He alleged more than 30 APC members have been killed by thugs across Osun since 2022, with Ijesaland accounting for 17.

“A common observation has been that whenever our members were killed, the self-acclaimed chief security officer of the state would not condemn the killing which gives credence to his approval of the rampant extra-judicial killings of our members and supporters in the state,” he said.

“The purpose is to scare away our members and supporters from exercising their civic responsibility on Saturday,” he added.

Wole Oke is a former member of the House of Representatives and Director-General of the APC governorship campaign. Accord Party is fielding incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke in the poll after his defection from PDP. Both parties have traded accusations in final days of campaign.

Police Yet To Confirm As Tension Rises

The APC allegations had not been independently confirmed at time of filing report.

Efforts to get confirmation from Osun State Police Command were unsuccessful as spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi had yet to respond to request, according to another online media, TheCable.

The alleged killing comes amid heightened tension ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, raising concerns about security as voters prepare to vote.

The Nigeria Police Force and INEC have assured of adequate security deployment for the poll.
