A Nigerian lawyer, Waliu Taofik, has clarified that popular content creator Habeeb Hamzat, known as Peller, can legally take another wife under Islamic law even after his recent civil marriage to Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, popularly called Jarvis.
The clarification came after videos of the couple’s court wedding went viral on Wednesday, sparking online debate over divorce, property rights and whether Peller, a Muslim, could still marry again under his faith.
Reacting in a post on his X account, Taofik maintained that Nigerian law permits a Muslim man who has married under the Marriage Act to subsequently marry another Muslim woman under Islamic law.
According to him, the statutory marriage does not invalidate a Muslim man’s ability to contract a marriage under Islamic rites.
“Peller, I am pleased to inform you that as a Muslim man that married under the Act, you’re allowed under the law to get married to another woman (a Muslim woman) under Islamic law (Nikkah). So, the so‑called ‘registry’ or ‘court’ marriage does not affect Muslim men,” he wrote.
His comments followed intense speculation on social media, where some users claimed Jarvis would automatically be entitled to half of Peller’s assets if the marriage ended in divorce.
Others questioned whether the court wedding would legally prevent the influencer from taking another wife in line with his Islamic faith.
Peller and Jarvis exchanged vows at a civil ceremony attended by family members and close associates before signing the marriage register.
Wedding Plans And The Couple’s Rising Profile
The court wedding precedes the couple’s white wedding, scheduled for August 1, 2026.
Earlier this month, the pair announced their wedding date through a cinematic video shared on their social media platforms before unveiling their official pre‑wedding photographs.
“Our hearts are full, our smiles are real, and we’re counting down to forever. See you at the wedding,” they wrote in a joint Instagram post.
Before the civil ceremony, Peller had completed the traditional marriage rites in Benin City, Edo State, where he formally met Jarvis’ family and fulfilled the customary bride price requirements.
The couple are among Nigeria’s most prominent social media personalities, attracting millions of followers through comedy skits, TikTok livestreams and relationship‑themed content.
Their union has drawn particular interest because both partners have built large online audiences around dating advice, pranks and relationship drama, making their transition from content collaborators to spouses a major talking point across Nigerian social media.
