Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has secured a historic re-election victory, winning all 16 local government areas and breaking a long-standing political pattern in the state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the result on Saturday, confirming that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate defeated his rivals with a sweeping margin.
Oyebanji polled about 85% of the total votes cast, defeating PDP candidate Wole Oluyede and ADC’s Dare Bejide.
The result marks the first time since Ekiti’s creation in 1996 that a sitting governor has won re-election.
Reacting in a statement shared on his X platform, Oyebanji described the outcome as a clear expression of public trust.
He said, “The voice of the people has reverberated from every part of our great state, and the message is clear.”
He added, “I am deeply humbled by the scale of this victory.”
He said, “Securing a clean sweep across all 16 local government areas, and 85% of the popular vote is a humbling vote of confidence.”
Historic Win Signals Shift In Ekiti Politics
Ekiti has long been known for its unpredictable voting pattern, where incumbents struggled to secure second terms.
Oyebanji’s victory signals a major shift, reflecting widespread support across urban and rural communities.
He said, “From our urban centers to our most remote communities, you have spoken with one thunderous voice.”
He added that the mandate supports continuity in development and governance.
He said, “There are no winners or losers today, there is only one united Ekiti.”
The governor pledged to expand his administration’s impact across all sectors.
He said, “I pledge to honor this immense trust by continuing to lead with humility, dedication and fairness.”
APC Hails Victory, Commends Electoral Process
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in reacting and welcoming the victory, described the result as a strong endorsement of Oyebanji’s leadership.
In a statement by spokesman Felix Morka, the party called the outcome historic.
It said, “Governor Oyebanji’s victory is epic as he becomes the first incumbent governor to win reelection.”
The party linked the result to people-focused policies and development programmes across the state.
It also praised INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders for ensuring a credible election.
It said, “We applaud the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and all oversight stakeholders.”
The APC commended Ekiti residents for their peaceful participation in the process.
It expressed confidence that Oyebanji’s second term will build on current achievements.
The party said it expects further progress aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
