ADC Clears Atiku, Amaechi and Hayatu‑Deen for Monday Primary

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) cleared former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar, ex‑Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and banker Mohammed Hayatu‑Deen for its presidential primary set for Monday, May 25, 2026.

The party said the primary will run in all wards across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi released the clearance list and said legislative and gubernatorial primaries were also completed.

A total of 513 House of Representatives, 109 Senate, and 80 gubernatorial candidates were cleared.

Hayatu‑Deen spoke at an ADC town hall for North‑Central members on Saturday, framing the primary as a national choice rather than an internal party vote.

Monday is not merely about selecting a candidate. Monday is about determining whether the ADC is truly serious about rescuing Nigeria and offering Nigerians a credible alternative to the failed politics they have endured for too long,” he said.

He warned against recycling past politicians and promised he carries no political baggage. He argued the party faces a choice between “serious leadership” and “recycled politics.

Hayatu‑Deen urged members to treat the primary as consequential for the 2027 general election and positioned himself as a unifying contender able to bridge regional, generational and religious divides.

The ADC joins other opposition platforms contesting the 2027 race, seeking to consolidate votes against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Opening primaries in all wards is intended to expand grassroots participation and produce a nationwide mandate.

Watch here for the final vote tallies after Monday’s ward‑by‑ward voting, post‑primary petitions, and any coalition moves by cleared candidates.
