The lawmaker representing the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, of Nigeria’s Federal Capital City, Abuja, Joshua Chinedu Obika, has finally addressed his recent string of political defections.
Obika explained that he left the Labour Party (LP) in March 2026 for the All Progressives Congress (APC) out of strategic necessity, arguing that the internal crisis within the LP made the party’s future look bleak.
According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had already refused to upload names for local council elections. This lack of certainty pushed him to seek a more stable platform.
“Most of us are aware of the crisis in the Labour Party and the fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) refused to upload the names of our candidates for the FCT Area Council election. When a party is not sure of itself, it ceases to exist.”
Concerns Over Peter Obi and the ADC Ticket
The lawmaker specifically mentioned the movements of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi. He alleged that Obi’s shift to the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) was risky due to the influence of Atiku Abubakar.
Obika feared that the Electoral Act 2022 would make him ineligible to contest if he followed a failing path. Consequently, he chose to protect his political career by switching sides.
He said: “Obi made up his mind to join the ADC, but we knew that he could npt win the ADC’s ticket because of Atiku’s influence and that of his other colleagues in the ADC.”
Furthermore, Obika admitted that Peter Obi remains a strong candidate despite his own move to the APC and later the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
He added, “Based on the Electoral Act, Obi failed to get the ticket, and we would be ineligible to contest. Many of us will face serious difficulty, and we may lose in the elections.”
Meanwhile, Obika dismissed accusations of betrayal. He argued that even the President and Peter Obi have used several parties to achieve their goals for a better Nigeria.
“Obi has said that even if it takes him crossing over to 20 parties to get the job done, he would do so. Obi has defected to several parties. Even the President has done the same thing,” he stated.
The lawmaker concluded that while he is now in the NDC, he still respects Obi’s credentials. He believes those calling him a traitor are simply after his seat in the House of Representatives.
