NDC Fix Presidential Primaries for May 29, Forms at ₦40m

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled its official roadmap for the 2027 general elections. The party released the full schedule for form sales and primaries on Tuesday.

According to the party’s press release, the sale of expression of interest forms begins on Wednesday, May 13. This window will remain open until Monday, May 18.

Aspiring candidates must prepare for a busy month. The party has scheduled screening and interviews for all aspirants between Tuesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Shortly after screening, the sale of nomination forms will start on May 21. This exercise will conclude on Saturday, May 23.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) typically requires parties to finish internal processes early. Therefore, the NDC set May 25 as the final deadline for submissions.

Any disagreements regarding the screening process will be handled quickly. Appeals are scheduled to take place between Monday, May 25 and Tuesday, May 26.

Primary Election Dates and Venue Locations

The NDC has fixed Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, for its primary elections for various offices. These include State and National Assembly seats.

However, the presidential primary election is the main event. It is scheduled for Friday, May 29, 2026, and will be held in the federal capital, Abuja.

The party stated that State House of Assembly aspirants will undergo screening in their home states. In contrast, those running for National Assembly seats must visit Abuja.

The national headquarters will host all screenings for the Senate, House of Representatives, and the presidency. Meanwhile, governorship primaries will take place at state lodges.

To ensure discipline, the party is introducing a strict code of conduct. All aspirants must sign an undertaking to follow the internal guidelines of the party.

The party explained that this measure will help maintain order. It wants every candidate to be fully committed to the party’s values before the 2027 polls.

Approved Fees and Discounts for Aspirants

The cost of participation varies significantly by office. For the State House of Assembly, expression of interest forms cost ₦1 million, while nomination forms are ₦1.5 million.

House of Representatives aspirants must pay ₦2 million for expression of interest and ₦4 million for nomination. Senate hopefuls face fees of ₦3 million and ₦5 million respectively.

Executive positions attract much higher rates. The governorship expression of interest is ₦10 million, with a ₦20 million nomination fee attached.

Presidential aspirants carry the heaviest financial burden. They are required to pay ₦20 million for expression of interest and ₦40 million for their nomination forms.

However, the NDC is promoting inclusivity for the 2027 general elections. It announced significant price cuts for specific groups of people.

Women will pay 50% of the approved fees. Furthermore, persons living with disability (PWDs) will enjoy a 25% reduction across every category of elective office.

The party’s leadership expressed confidence in this roadmap. They believe it provides a clear path for choosing the best representatives for the country.

The statement reads, “The party reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and credible primary election process capable of producing competent candidates for the 2027 general elections.”

Former Anambra and Kano governors, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, respectively, recently moved over to the new party, where they are expected to be favourites to clinch the presidential ticket.
