Ihedioha Reaffirms Loyalty to ADC as Peter Obi’s Move to NDC

Former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has confirmed he will stay with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This decision comes despite the high-profile departure of political heavyweights Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The two leaders officially joined the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on May 3, 2026.

This mass exit occurred during the NDC National Convention in Abuja. However, Ihedioha clarified his position through his verified social media handles on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

The former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has spent the past year building the ADC coalition.

Consequently, he stated he does not see a reason to leave the platform he helped establish.

Commitment to Good Governance and Coalition Building

Ihedioha explained that his work with the ADC focuses on creating a coalition of well-meaning Nigerians. This group is dedicated to delivering an accountable, inclusive, and prosperous nation.

While he had hoped Peter Obi would pursue his 2027 aspirations within the ADC, he respects the democratic right of leaders to make political choices.

“I respect the democratic right of leaders to make political choices based on their convictions,” Ihedioha stated.

Furthermore, he mentioned that his shared vision with Obi for a better Nigeria transcends any single political platform. He noted that he has invested significant effort into the ADC’s mission.

Meanwhile, Ihedioha urged his supporters to remain focused on the goals of the coalition. He asserted that the party’s philosophy is sufficient to address the country’s internal challenges.

This announcement acts as a stabilizing force for the ADC. Recently, the party faced a mass exodus of several lawmakers to the NDC.

By staying, Ihedioha maintains his history of party loyalty. He previously served as a top official in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before his transition to the ADC in 2024.
