Nigeria security woes escalated after the United States issued a Level 3 travel advisory and began evacuating embassy staff.

The warning, released in April 2026, cited insecurity and weak emergency systems, triggering sharp reactions from political leaders and opposition figures.

Peter Obi described the move as a troubling signal for the country’s global image and safety environment.

“This development should be treated as a national emergency,” he said.

“It reflects worsening insecurity and declining global confidence.”

He added that Nigeria’s position on the Global Terrorism Index shows the depth of the challenge facing the nation.

“We continue to witness escalating violence and threats to communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, he warned that insecurity now affects daily life across the country.

“Many Nigerians can no longer live, work, worship, or travel safely,” he added.

Obi Warns Of Governance Failure And Security Breakdown

Obi linked the advisory to governance challenges, saying political priorities have overshadowed citizen welfare.

“The primary duty of any government is to protect lives and property,” he said.

He referenced recent killings, including that of a senior officer in Borno State, as evidence of rising danger.

“This shows the dangerous conditions facing both civilians and security personnel,” he said.

Furthermore, he compared current leadership distractions to historical decline.

“Without safety and stability, there will be no nation left to govern,” he warned.

ADC Condemns Advisory As Diplomatic Setback

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) criticised the advisory, calling it a national embarrassment.

Its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the warning reflects deep governance issues.

“This is another public indictment of failure to govern,” he said.

The party pointed to healthcare and infrastructure gaps referenced in the advisory.

“Medical facilities are not equipped to required standards, and many medications are unavailable,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the ADC criticised Nigeria’s absence of ambassadors in key capitals like Washington D.C.

“Nigeria is voiceless at the world’s most important tables,” it said.

The party questioned delays in diplomatic appointments.

“Serious governments don’t use reforms as excuses to stop governing,” the statement added.

Diplomatic Vacuum Raises Global Concerns

The ADC said Nigeria’s foreign policy gaps are weakening its global influence.

“We are absent where we must be present,” it declared.

It added that several global leadership changes have occurred without Nigerian diplomatic engagement.

“This has been an outright diplomatic failure,” the party said.

The statement warned that declining global perception could hurt investment and cooperation.

“Foreign confidence in our systems is plummeting,” it added.

Calls For Sanctions And International Intervention Grow

Meanwhile, Timi Frank called for international action against Nigerian officials.

“The international community must not wait until Nigeria descends into crisis,” he said.

He alleged that institutions are being used to weaken opposition ahead of future elections.

“The aim is to ensure no strong challenger emerges,” he said.

Frank warned that instability in Nigeria could trigger wider regional consequences.

“Any crisis here could create a massive refugee situation,” he added.

He also accused key institutions, including Independent National Electoral Commission, of bias.

“Democracy must remain a contest of ideas, not a monarchical system,” he said.

Furthermore, he called for visa bans and asset freezes against officials if allegations are proven.

“Those undermining democracy should face consequences,” he added.

He also offered to provide information on assets held abroad by public officials.

“I am ready to assist global authorities with relevant details,” he said.
