Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye issued a stern warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
He alleged that the Presidency is attempting to weaken the democratic opposition to prolong its hold on power.
Meanwhile, Melaye utilized his Facebook page to share a video address reaching thousands of followers across the country.
“Tinubu’s ambition to be the Paul Biya and Musa Kankan of Nigeria will not work,” Melaye stated in the footage.
Paul Biya has served as the President of Cameroon since 1982, representing one of the longest-serving leaders on the continent.
Furthermore, Melaye alleged that the current administration intends to stifle political competition to ensure a permanent grip on the Aso Rock Villa.
The former senator insisted that Nigerians must remain vigilant against any shift toward autocracy.
He said the current administration is fostering a “Kabiyesi mentality” within the Nigerian political space.
“Kabiyesi” is a Yoruba term traditionally used to address kings, implying a leader whose authority cannot be questioned.
“We will resist one party state, Kabiyesi mentality will not work, arise Nigerians,” Melaye declared in the social media post.
Furthermore, Melaye claimed that the government’s approach to governance is increasingly mirroring a dictatorship rather than a federal republic.
Nigeria currently operates under the 1999 Constitution, which mandates a multi-party system and periodic elections every four years.
However, strangely, all the major opposition political parties are in turmoil due to leadership crisis, which they allege is fomented by politicians loyal to the president in their midst.
Melaye, who represented Kogi West in the 8th National Assembly, alleged that the current economic situation is a result of indifferent leadership.
Concerns Over Nigeria’s Perilous Economic Times
The former lawmaker alleged that the administration has become indifferent to the suffering of ordinary citizens facing a 35% cost increase in basic goods.
“We are in perilous times in the country, we have never seen this kind of situation like this in this country,” Melaye alleged.
Consequently, he argued that the presidency has failed to address the core needs of the electorate while focusing on political expansion.
“Unfortunately, we have a president who doesn’t care,” he added while describing the current national climate.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties are racing against time in their search for a unified front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next yea’s general election.
