The Cameroonian Ministry of External Relations confirmed on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, that 16 nationals died while fighting for the Russian military in Ukraine.
This is the first official confirmation from Yaoundé since the conflict escalated in February 2022. Consequently, it marks a significant shift in government transparency.
Authorities identified the individuals through a document provided by the Russian embassy on March 5, 2026. Furthermore, the names were broadcast on national radio this Monday.
“The citizens died in the zone of the so-called special military operation,” the official document from the Russian embassy alleged.
Russia uses the term “special military operation” to describe its full-scale invasion. Meanwhile, Cameroon is now managing the domestic fallout of these foreign casualties.
“We call on the families of the deceased to reach out to the government,” the national radio announcement stated on behalf of the ministry.
Official Identification Of Fallen Cameroonian Fighters
The government obtained the list of names through a verbal note from the Russian embassy in Yaoundé. This communication took place earlier in March.
“This list containing 16 names was obtained through a verbal note from the Russian embassy,” the Ministry of External Relations stated in its report.
Furthermore, the authorities alleged that these citizens were part of the Russian armed forces. However, the exact nature of their recruitment remains under scrutiny.
This development follows years of reports concerning African mercenaries serving on the front lines.
“Russia has recruited over 1,400 African nationals to fight in its war against Ukraine,” the Ukrainian government alleged in November 2025.
Meanwhile, investigative groups have tracked the high cost of this recruitment. Consequently, the data shows a disproportionate impact on Cameroonian families.
Rising Death Toll Among African Mercenaries
The investigative group “All Eyes on Wagner” has monitored private military activities across Africa and Europe for several years.
“Cameroon has recorded the highest death toll among Africans who were conscripted into the war,” the All Eyes on Wagner report stated.
Furthermore, the data suggests that 94 Cameroonians have died out of 335 fighters who entered the conflict zone since 2023. Consequently, this is a death rate of over 28%.
“Hundreds of Africans who enlisted in the Russian military between 2023 and mid-2025 had died,” the investigative group alleged.
Other African nations, including Kenya and South Africa, are taking measures. They want to stop citizens from being tricked into joining foreign forces under false pretenses.
Furthermore, these nations allege that dubious means are often used to recruit vulnerable young men. Consequently, governments are increasing border and travel surveillance.
“Several African countries have taken various measures to address cases of citizens allegedly tricked into joining,” the ministry report confirmed.
Meanwhile, the families of the 16 identified Cameroonians are beginning the difficult process of engagement with the Ministry of External Relations.
The government has not yet provided details on the repatriation of remains.
