Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje called for a total restructuring of Nigerian football on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
He spoke following the national team’s recent four-nation friendly tournament held in Antalya, Turkey.
Sodje alleged that the current administrative approach has failed to produce meaningful results for the country.
“It was a decent outing,” he said while discussing the performance of the team during the games in Turkey.
However, the former Reading FC star believes these friendly matches cannot hide the systemic rot within the federation.
“We cannot ignore that,” Sodje said regarding the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the global showpiece.
Failed Systems and World Cup Disappointment
Nigeria failed to secure a ticket to the 2026 World Cup after a disastrous qualifying run against several lower-ranked nations.
Consequently, the former defender argued that short-term performances should not distract from these long-term failures.
According to Sports247, Sodje wants a strategy that addresses structural weaknesses instead of temporary fixes.
“This system is not working,” he stated. He believes that continuing with the same methods will only lead to repeated pain.
Furthermore, Sodje believes the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Committee must take full responsibility.
Sodje played for the national team between 2005 and 2009. He earned several caps and was known for his physical presence.
Demanding Accountability from the NFF Committee
The Technical Committee manages the selection of coaches and oversees the tactical direction of all national teams.
“Do better,” Sodje told the committee. He believes they must play a more active role in shaping a new tactical identity.
Meanwhile, the NFF has faced constant criticism for its handling of coach contracts and player development programs.
Sodje believes that a nation with Nigeria’s heritage should never settle for mediocre administrative standards.
“We must change our approach,” he added. He believes fresh ideas are necessary to save the future of the sport.
Currently, the Super Eagles are preparing for future continental qualifiers. However, the lack of a clear path remains.
Consequently, fans across the country have mirrored Sodje’s demands for an overhaul of the footballing body.
Without these changes, Sodje warns that the outcome for Nigerian football will remain exactly the same.
