Iraq has ended a four-decade wait to return to the global football stage, defeating Bolivia 2-1 on Wednesday to qualify for the fifa-world-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2026 FIFA World Cup.

The historic victory in the intercontinental playoff held in Mexico marks the first time the “Lions of Mesopotamia” have reached the finals since the 1986 tournament.

Goals from Ali Al-Hamadi and Aymen Hussein secured the result. Consequently, the triumph has caused massive celebrations across Baghdad and other major Iraqi cities.

The journey to qualification was fraught with logistical hurdles. Due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, the squad traveled for three days overland and by air to reach the venue.

Iraq is now one of the 48 countries confirmed for the tournament. They will compete in Group I alongside France, Senegal, and Norway.

Aymen Hussein Volley Decides High-Stakes Playoff

Iraq started with intensity and took the lead after only nine minutes. Al-Hamadi rose highest to head home a corner, rewarding a dominant opening spell by the Graham Arnold-led side.

However, Bolivia responded before the interval. Moises Paniagua found the roof of the net after a deflected shot from Ramiro Vaca fell perfectly into his path inside the box.

The decisive moment arrived eight minutes into the second half. Substitute Marko Lawk-Farji delivered a precise cross for captain Aymen Hussein, who clipped a first-time finish into the bottom corner.

“This victory is incredibly precious to us, despite the war raging,” 22-year-old supporter Ahmed told news agencies during the celebrations in Karrada.

He alleged that the win has united the nation across all sects. Furthermore, many compared the atmosphere to the 2007 AFC Asian Cup triumph during previous periods of unrest.

Baghdad Celebrates Amid Regional Security Concerns

As the final whistle blew after nine minutes of stoppage time, fireworks lit up the sky over Baghdad. Thousands of fans stood on cars waving flags to mark the achievement.

In the Karrada district, the mood was electric. Tea sellers offered their drinks for free to passers-by. Meanwhile, citizens expressed pride in the teamโ€™s resilience under pressure.

Celebrations in Baghdad

“Despite the dire economic situation and the war, our national team won,” Ali al-Muhandis stated while celebrating in the streets of the capital.

He noted that Iraqis often excel in exceptional circumstances. Consequently, the teamโ€™s success is seen as a symbol of hope amidst the wider regional tensions between foreign powers.

Horizontal information reveals that the 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico with an expanded 48-team format.

The qualification of Iraq adds a significant narrative of perseverance to the tournament. Previously, Iraq’s only World Cup appearance in Mexico 1986 saw them exit in the group stages.

Under Graham Arnoldโ€™s leadership, the team has adopted a disciplined defensive structure. This was evident as they held firm against late Bolivian pressure to seal the win.
