Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the employment of 50 additional nurses to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state’s medical facilities.
This recruitment is part of a larger plan to inject 771 medical personnel into the state’s health system. Consequently, the government aims to bridge the existing manpower gap in rural and urban clinics.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, announced the decision on Monday during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia. Furthermore, he noted that 500 nurses have already been formally engaged.
The recruitment covers various categories of healthcare professionals. This follows a comprehensive review of the state’s current medical capacity.
“The state government has approved the recruitment of a total of 771 medical personnel across various categories,” Kanu stated during the executive council update.
He explained that the administration remains committed to ensuring every citizen has access to quality care.
Meanwhile, the government is also upgrading the infrastructure where these new staff will serve.
Nursing College Secures National Diploma Accreditation
In a significant academic milestone, the Abia State College of Nursing Sciences has secured initial accreditation for its National Diploma (ND) programme.
The approval followed an intensive assessment visit by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). This technical body regulates and oversees technical and vocational education in Nigeria.
“The Abia State College of Nursing Sciences has secured initial accreditation for its National Diploma programme,” Kanu confirmed to journalists.
This accreditation ensures that nursing students in Abia receive a standardized education recognized across the federation. Consequently, graduates will be better positioned for professional licensing and advanced studies.
Furthermore, the government is currently implementing major gully erosion control and flood management projects.
These are located in communities such as Amiyi and Amaogudu in Isuikwuato.
Waste Bin Mandate For All Commercial Vehicles
The state government has also introduced a new environmental policy aimed at ending indiscriminate littering. Starting April 1, 2026, all commercial vehicles must be equipped with waste bins.
The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) will enforce this directive. Kanu alleged that the policy is vital for promoting cleanliness and responsible waste disposal.
“All commercial vehicles in the state must be equipped with waste bins starting from April 1, 2026,” the Commissioner stated.
ASEPA General Manager, Ogbonnia Okereke, issued a stern warning to residents regarding sanitation laws. He noted that strict enforcement measures are in place to sanction those who dispose of refuse improperly.
“We urge residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal, as strict enforcement measures are in place to sanction offenders,” Okereke stated.
The Ministry of Environment and Urban Renewal is also working in Iyama and Iberenta in Ikwuano to tackle ecological threats.
These efforts combined suggest a multi-pronged approach to state development under the Otti administration.
