Gunmen killed an unspecified number of residents in Agwan Rukuba, Jos North, on Sunday night. The attack took place at approximately 7:30 pm during a period of normal business.

Witnesses alleged the assailants arrived on motorcycles and began firing indiscriminately into the crowd. Consequently, the local community descended into chaos and fear.

“The attackers rode on motorcycles and fired bullets indiscriminately while people were going about their businesses,” an eyewitness told another online news media, the Daily Trust.

“They were firing bullets everywhere and caused massive panic among our people,” a local resident explained.

“The gunmen immediately fled the community after the attack,” the witness added.

Meanwhile, irate youths blocked major access roads in the community following the invasion. Furthermore, they allegedly killed several tricycle (Napep) riders and passengers.

“The irate youths are very angry and have blocked the roads in retaliation,” another source added.

“Many people are still trying to identify the victims as we speak,” the resident continued.

Reprisal Violence Paralyzes Jos Metropolis

“The incident has caused significant tension within the Jos Metropolis,” a local security source reported.

Soldiers from Operation Enduring Peace arrived at the community to restore law and order. Their primary task is to prevent the further escalation of communal violence.

“I will give details of the incident after ascertaining the cause of the attack,” stated Captain Polycap Oteh, the spokesperson for the military operation.

Operation Enduring Peace is a specialized task force designed to mitigate communal clashes in Plateau State. It provides a rapid response to localized security threats.

The unit works in collaboration with other security agencies to maintain stability. Consequently, the deployment of tactical units is a standard procedure in the state.

Operation Enduring Peace Restores Fragile Calm

“We are working to prevent the situation from getting out of hand,” a member of the tactical team said.

“The deployment of soldiers was necessary to stop the youths from carrying out more attacks,” the source added.

Plateau State has historically faced recurring cycles of violence. However, recent security efforts have sought to bridge the gap between divided communities.

“The exact number of persons killed could not be ascertained because people were still identifying victims,” the initial report stated.

Meanwhile, residents of Jos Metropolis are being cautious. Many businesses closed early on Sunday night to avoid being caught in the reprisal actions.

“We are staying indoors because we do not know what will happen next,” a shop owner in Jos North shared.

“The government must do something to stop these people who come on motorcycles to kill,” the merchant added.

Security patrols have been intensified across the city to ensure safety. The military says it is now again on high alert as investigations into the cause of the raid continue.
