On Monday morning, March 30, 2026, hundreds of residents in Jos North, Plateau State, protested the deadly Palm Sunday massacre in Anguwan Rukuba.

The protesters gathered at the site of the attack. They argued that the current curfew is insufficient to stop the recurring cycle of violence in Plateau State.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang arrived at the scene to calm the crowd. He sympathized with families who lost loved ones during the late-evening assault.

“This is a painful thing for all of us,” Governor Mutfwang said during his visit. “Angwan-Rukuba is a community that harbors every ethnic nationality in Plateau.”

“I personally have relations that have lived in Angwan-Rukuba, therefore this is a pain to all of us. It is not just to a few people,” he added.

Consequently, the governor asked residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands. He promised that the state would handle the burial of the victims.

“By the grace of God, all these people will be given a decent burial. We will not allow any mass burial,” the governor stated.

“We will make sure that we liaise with the families and give them a decent burial. They didn’t deserve to die like this,” he continued.

Furthermore, the state government pledged to cover the medical costs for those injured. Many victims remain in local hospitals receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.

“As for those that are in hospitals, I want you to know that the government will take full responsibility for their medical bills,” Mutfwang confirmed.

UNIJOS Suspends Examination as Tension Grips the State

Meanwhile, the University of Jos has suspended all examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. The institution cited the heightened tension as the primary reason.

The university management advised all students and staff to stay indoors. Security agencies are monitoring the situation.

“The Vice Chancellor has directed that all examinations scheduled to hold on Monday, 30th, and Tuesday, 31st March, 2026, are postponed,” the management announced.

“Members of the University community be advised to be very vigilant and extra careful with their movements with IMMEDIATE EFFECT,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the attackers allegedly rode on motorcycles during the 7:30 pm raid. They fired indiscriminately into the crowd, causing mass panic and death.

“University Management is actively liaising with the relevant Security agencies and monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the lives of members,” it said.

The university also provided a dedicated security number for students. They were told to report any signs of a peace breach to the security division immediately.

Governor Mutfwang Pledges Justice for Massacre Victims

Governor Mutfwang assured the grieving community that the President is aware of the situation. He vowed to pursue the case until justice is served for every victim.

“Even the president is aware of this matter, we will follow it through and make sure that we get justice for the victims by the grace of God,” he stated.

Irate youths had previously blocked roads in response to the attack. They allegedly targeted motorcycle riders as the community struggled to process the tragedy.

“I want to plead with you; please let us not take the laws into our hands, I beg you,” Mutfwang said. He begged the youth to remain calm despite their anger.

“Please, I plead with you, leaders, please, I beg you, young people, let us not take the laws into our hands. In the heat of your anger, please calm down,” he added.

Security forces are now stationed throughout Anguwan Rukuba. Their presence follows the deployment of additional units to restore order after the violent outburst.

Historically, Jos North has faced ethnic and religious clashes. The area hosts several institutions, making it a critical zone for state security and stability.
