Christians worldwide observed Palm Sunday with vibrant processions and solemn services on March 29, 2026. This year’s celebration unfolded against a backdrop of severe geopolitical tensions.
At the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV used his Mass at St. Peter’s Square to deliver a strong message. He condemned ongoing violence and warned against using religion to justify conflict.
Speaking to tens of thousands, the 70-year-old pontiff described God as a “King of Peace.” He specifically referenced conflicts involving Iran and the war in Ukraine during his address.
“The choice of humility speaks to us today,” stated Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). He noted that Jesus entered Jerusalem without a show of force.
Economic Hardship And Unprecedented Jerusalem Restrictions
In Nigeria, large congregations gathered in cities like Lagos and Abuja despite significant economic pressures. Worshippers waved palm fronds to symbolize victory and peace amidst rising inflation.
“Across Nigeria, many are feeling the weight of the times,” CAN noted in an official statement. “The cost of living is rising. For countless families, daily life is getting harder.”
Furthermore, the apex Christian body linked local suffering to global instability. They alleged that tensions involving Iran and the United States are currently unsettling global energy markets.
“The impact is already here. Fuel is more expensive,” the statement read. Consequently, the clergy encouraged Nigerian leaders to show empathy and ease the burden on the citizenry.
Meanwhile, a grave precedent occurred in Jerusalem. Israeli police reportedly blocked the Latin Patriarch, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for the first time in centuries.
“This incident is a grave precedent and disregards the sensibilities of billions of people around the world,” the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said in a formal statement.
International Condemnation Of Holy Site Violations
The Patriarch and the Custos of the Holy Land, Fr. Francesco Ielpo, were proceeding privately. However, they were forced to turn back by security forces on their way to Mass.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the decision. He stated that worship for all religions must be guaranteed in Jerusalem to maintain the historical status of holy places.
“I condemn this decision by the Israeli police,” Macron posted on X. He alleged that the action adds to a worrying series of violations regarding Jerusalem’s sacred sites.
The 75-page framework for religious freedom often cited by international bodies suggests these restrictions violate basic rights. Meanwhile, centuries-old traditions like palm weaving continued in Spain and Poland.
“He is a king of peace,” the Pope reminded the faithful. He expressed concern for Christians in conflict zones who struggle to observe Holy Week due to persistent instability.
Holy Week commemorates the final days of Jesus Christ. It began with this commemoration of his entry into Jerusalem, where he was welcomed by crowds waving palm branches.
Following these events, the Catholic Church will move into the solemn rites of Good Friday. This leads to Easter Sunday, the most significant date on the Christian calendar.
