The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed the immediate opening of a 15-kilometre section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway to vehicular traffic.
This directive follows significant progress in the ongoing reconstruction of the major highway linking the South East region.
The road serves as a critical corridor for the movement of people and essential commerce.
Minister Umahi noted that the decision aims to ease congestion and reduce travel time for thousands of daily road users.
He explained that opening completed sections provides immediate relief while work continues on the remaining stretches of the project.
The minister gave these instructions during an inspection tour of the project sites, saying that the federal government is determined to ensure that contractors deliver durable roads that meet international standards.
Contractors Directed To Maintain Quality And Strict Timelines
The minister instructed contractors handling the highway project to maintain high-quality standards and adhere to agreed timelines.
He noted that infrastructure projects must be delivered efficiently to meet the high expectations of the public.
“We are going to be very strict with the quality of work being done here,” Umahi stated. “The supervision will be strengthened to ensure that every kobo spent translates to a road that will last for decades,” he added.
Furthermore, the minister alleged that the ministry will not tolerate any unnecessary delays from contractors.
He noted that regular monitoring teams will now visit the site more frequently to track progress against the project blueprint.
The Ministry of Works advised motorists to observe all traffic rules and cooperate with officials managing the newly reopened 15-kilometre stretch.
This move is expected to significantly reduce the gridlock often experienced at the major entry points of the expressway.
“Opening this section is a strategy to provide immediate relief to Nigerians while we finish the rest,” the minister added. He noted that the use of concrete technology on some parts of the road would ensure long-term durability against heavy truck traffic.
Construction will continue on the remaining portions of the expressway as part of the broader federal effort to complete the project by the set deadline.
The ministry noted that similar strategies might be applied to other major highway projects across the country to reduce the burden on commuters.
