Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sealed the residences of former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Monday.
The action in the Maitama district of Abuja led to a heated confrontation between the former minister and plain-clothes officials.
Malami challenged the validity of the operation as officials marked his walls with the words: “Restrained order, EFCC, Keep off.”
The former AGF alleged that the court order used by the commission had already lapsed.
Daily Trust reported that the encounter was tense as Malami demanded to see a specific directive.
“Order granted for 14 days has elapsed and you’re coming to embarrass me,” Malami told the operatives.
He noted that the matter is currently pending in court and described the early morning invasion as a move to intimidate his family.
Legal Controversy Surrounding Expired Forfeiture Orders
The EFCC insisted they were acting on a valid court order regarding properties under interim forfeiture.
However, Malami told Channels TV that his legal team had already filed an application to set the order aside.
“The order here is not specific, giving you a clear directive to come and mark my property,” Malami stated during the altercation.
He alleged that the 14-day window to respond had been met by joining issues before the court.
Legal experts have agreed that enforcing an expired order is technically illegal. If an order is not used within the set time, it must be renewed by the court rather than simply enforced.
Corruption And Terrorism Financing Charges Surface
This latest raid follows a series of legal battles for the former AGF. In December 2025, officials searched his offices to recover documents related to a past judicial commission of inquiry.
Currently, Malami faces a 16-count charge involving the alleged diversion of billions of Naira. The federal government alleged that he used various companies to conceal the origin of over ₦1 billion in local bank accounts.
Furthermore, the Department of State Services (DSS) recently arraigned Malami over alleged terrorism financing.
They alleged that he knowingly abetted financiers by refusing to prosecute them during his eight-year tenure as the nation’s chief law officer.
ICPC Sets Date For Nasir El-Rufai Arraignment
While Malami deals with the EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is moving against another major political figure.
The agency announced it will arraign former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, today, Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
El-Rufai faces charges in both Federal and State High Courts in Kaduna. These charges include money laundering and the alleged conversion of public property.
The ICPC claime that the former governor has been served and will appear alongside several accomplices.
“The suit with number FHC/KD/73/2026 has charges ranging from conversion of and possession of public property, to money laundering,” ICPC spokesman John Odey stated.
The agency noted that it remains committed to following due process during this high-profile prosecution.
