The leadership crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) reached a major turning point today, Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
Reports indicate that Tajudeen Baruwa has successfully taken control of the union’s national secretariat in Abuja.
This development effectively ends the recent tenure of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.
Security personnel were present as Baruwa and his supporters entered the premises to resume administrative duties.
The transition followed a series of legal victories and internal pressure from various state councils.
Baruwa alleged that his return is a victory for the rule of law within the transport union.
Abuja Secretariat Secured Amid Tight Security Presence
Baruwa addressed his supporters shortly after entering the building. He noted that the union must return to its constitutional roots to serve the interests of all transport workers across Nigeria.
“Today is a victory for our constitution and the dedicated members who stood by the truth,” Baruwa stated. “We are here to restore order and ensure that every member feels represented in this great union,” he added.
Security officials have remained at the Garki office to prevent any potential clashes between rival groups.
So far, the process has remained peaceful despite the long-standing tension between the two factions.
MC Oluomo, who had held the position of National President for several months, has reportedly vacated the seat.
His supporters noted that they are reviewing the current situation before making a formal statement.
Baruwa alleged that his rival’s leadership was not in line with the established voting processes of the union. “The era of using force to take over the national office is over,” Baruwa noted during his first briefing as the reinstated leader.
The new leadership will now begin the process of reconciling different state chapters. Many branches have been divided over which leader to follow during the year-long dispute.
