The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) has officially announced the selection of 3,200 young business owners for its 2026 Entrepreneurship Programme. This massive selection aims to empower the next generation of African leaders to drive economic growth across all 54 countries on the continent.
Founder of the Foundation, Mr. Tony Elumelu, led the official unveiling ceremony on Monday, March 23, 2026. He described this year’s initiative as a deliberate way to spread wealth and opportunity to those who need it most.
The Guardian Nigeria reported that the foundation received over 265,000 applications from every corner of Africa this year. However, only a small percentage of these visions could be selected for the final funding stage.
The foundation will release the funds in four different groups throughout the year. The first 1,951 beneficiaries will receive their support this March. Another 100 will follow in May, 100 in August, and a final 1,049 entrepreneurs will get their grants in November.
Spreading Prosperity To Defeat Poverty Across Africa
Mr. Elumelu spoke passionately about the responsibility the private sector has toward society. He noted that creating wealth for others is a form of “enlightened self-interest” for every successful person.
“What we do is not because we have so much, but because we see it as a responsibility,” Elumelu stated. “Poverty is a threat to all of us. The more prosperity we spread, the better for everyone,” he added.
The Chairman of Heirs Holdings also stated that young Africans must take the lead in building the continent. He believe that external help is good, but the real work of development belongs to the people living here.
“No one but us will develop Africa,” Elumelu noted during his speech. He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating a better environment for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) to grow.
Co-founder of the foundation, Dr. Awele Elumelu, shared her excitement for the new group of business owners. Still, she called on more global partners to join the mission to help the thousands who could not be selected this time.
CEO of the Foundation, Somachi Chris-Asoluka, noted that this event is more than just a list of names. She believe it is a celebration of the legendary African spirit of hard work and talent.
“Today is an affirmation of over 265,000 visions for a better future,” Chris-Asoluka stated. Since 2015, the foundation has disbursed over $100 million to more than 24,000 entrepreneurs. This has created 1.5 million jobs and generated $4.2 billion in revenue.
International groups like the European Union and UNICEF also attended the event to show their support.
Massimo De Luca, from the EU Delegation, noted that investing in young women entrepreneurs is one of the most effective ways to change a country.
Former Beneficiaries Share Stories of Transformation
Past students of the programme also shared how the grant changed their lives. Aisha Samira Abdullahi, a Nigerian fashion entrepreneur, revealed that her business grew by 200% after joining the programme. She now makes $40,000 every year and trains young women in her community.
Another success story came from Aisha Langat in Kenya. Her agribusiness now makes over $500,000 in revenue and helps 12,000 small-scale farmers. These stories show that a small amount of seed capital can create a huge wave of success.

The Foundation claimed it received 325,000 initial applications, from which, through a rigorous elimination procedure, it ended with the final list.
