Minister Blames Gas Shortage for Low Power Supply in Nigeria

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has addressed the current nationwide blackout.

He says gas supply challenges are the primary cause of the low electricity generation.

Nigeria’s power output has recently dropped below 4,000 megawatts.

Thermal power plants now receive less than 43% of the gas they need to work.

This lack of fuel has forced many plants to shut down or operate poorly.

“The current poor power supply is due to the low supply of gas to the generating companies,” Adelabu stated.

According to Punch Newspapers, the sector owes gas suppliers ₦3.3 trillion.

This financial gap has caused a major crisis for power producers.

Tackling The Financial Debt In The Power Sector

The Minister alleged that these debts have made it hard for suppliers to keep gas flowing.

Total debts across the electricity value chain have now reached ₦6.8 trillion.

Consequently, many generating companies cannot pay for the fuel they require.

However, the Minister noted that the government is working to settle these bills.

“Concrete measures are being implemented to ensure more reliable electricity for homes,” he said.

He added that these steps will help businesses and industries grow.

This situation matters because many Nigerians are suffering in total darkness.

Small business owners are spending too much money on petrol and diesel.

Also, families cannot store food or stay cool during the current heat.

Solving the gas issue is the only way to stabilize the national grid.
