The Federal Government has strongly condemned the recent assault on women and girls during a cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
Officials described the event as a grave violation of human rights that no tradition can justify.
Viral videos on social media showed several women being chased, harassed, and physically abused in public.
These disturbing clips sparked outrage across the country this week. Therefore, the government is demanding the immediate arrest of everyone involved in these acts.
The Minister of Women Affairs stated that the law must protect every citizen from such violence.
“We will not tolerate any act that strips our women of their dignity under the guise of culture,” the Minister said.
Furthermore, the government insisted that the perpetrators must face the full weight of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act.
Seeking Justice For Victims
The Federal Government is working closely with the Delta State government to identify the victims. They want to provide medical and legal support to those affected by the attacks.
According to a report by ActionAid Nigeria, these incidents show a deep failure to keep communal spaces safe. ActionAid noted that no traditional belief should ever excuse or hide violence against people.
“All individuals involved in these acts must be urgently identified and brought to book,” the group stated in a recent press release.
Meanwhile, the government has asked the police to speed up their investigation. They want a transparent process that restores public trust in the justice system.
Officials alleged that some local leaders tried to downplay the violence as a simple cultural misunderstanding.
However, the government maintains that safety comes before any tradition. They are now looking into how to prevent such incidents in future festivals.
They also want to ensure that 100% of the perpetrators are prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
