The Nigerian Army has issued a high-level security alert across the Borno State capital following a coordinated triple suicide bombing that rocked the city on Monday evening.

Preliminary intelligence suggests that Boko Haram may have successfully infiltrated the metropolis with additional suicide bombers currently “at large” and targeting crowded locations.

The official confirmation came via a statement released on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, by Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK).

The explosions occurred at approximately 7:05 PM on Monday, March 16, a time deliberately chosen to coincide with Iftar, when thousands of residents gathered to break their Ramadan fast.

The attackers detonated their Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at three high-traffic gateways of the city:

1. The Post Office Area: The central commercial hub of Maiduguri.
2. Monday Market Axis: The city’s largest and most crowded trading zone.
3. University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) Entrance: A critical medical facility entrance.

“The cowardly attacks targeted crowded public areas in a desperate attempt by the terrorists to inflict mass casualties and create panic,” Lt. Col. Uba stated.

He characterized the timing as a “heinous” exploitation of a sacred religious moment.

Security Forces on High Alert

While the exact death toll is still being verified by hospital sources, emergency teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Red Cross worked through the night to evacuate victims to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the UMTH.

In response to the “active threat,” troops of Operation HADIN KAI, alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, have cordoned off the affected areas.

More concerning, however, is the military’s admission that the threat has not been neutralized.

“Preliminary information indicates that the terrorists may have deployed multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri with the intention of carrying out further coordinated bombings,” the Army warned.

State of Emergency Measures

To prevent a follow-up strike, security forces have intensified:

• Ariel and Ground Surveillance: Drones and helicopters are monitoring the city fringes.
• Counter-IED Sweeps: EOD teams are checking abandoned bags and suspicious vehicles.
• Stop-and-Search Operations: Increased checkpoints have been established at major entry and exit points of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC).

President Bola Tinubu addressed the situation earlier today, painting the attacks in the usual government refrain as “acts of desperation” by a fading insurgency, even though it is now more blatant to attack fortified military bases.

He vowed that the military would relentlessly pursue the elements responsible.

Public Advisory

The military claims it is on top of the situation but residents to remain calm but “extremely vigilant.” Citizens are advised to:

• Avoid crowded areas where possible during the evening hours.
• Report unattended items or strange parcels immediately.
• Monitor neighbors and report unusual movements to the nearest security agency.

As the city enters another night of Ramadan, the atmosphere remains tense, with a heavy military presence visible across all major intersections.
