NSE President Tasks Engineers on Smart Infrastructure Solutions

The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Ali Rabiu, has called on professionals to create home-grown technologies.

He stated that this is necessary to solve the country’s biggest development problems. His call was made during a webinar for the 2026 World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development on Wednesday.

The event focused on the theme, “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitalisation.”

During the session, Rabiu alleged that relying on imported systems slows down national growth.

He told members that Nigeria’s challenges, such as energy deficits and flooding, are actually hidden business opportunities.

Focus on Smart and Resilient Cities

Key speakers at the event explained that smart engineering uses data and digital tools to improve life. They mentioned that modern systems can help manage urban congestion and waste more effectively.

Prof. Hilary Owamah from Delta State University spoke about the need for “intelligent infrastructure.” He noted that engineering today must predict and prevent problems rather than just repair them.

The NSE President also mentioned that young engineers are the hope of the future. He promised that the society will continue to build their capacity.

Rabiu encouraged the use of artificial intelligence and smart sensors in new construction projects. He stated that these tools will make Nigeria’s infrastructure more resilient to environmental pressures.

The society confirmed that its participation in this global event shows its commitment to growth.

The group plans to work closely with the government to align with global development trends. This cooperation will help build modern transportation networks and smart cities across Nigeria.
