Ex-President Obasanjo Dismiss Death Rumors, as Tinubu Pays Tribute at 89

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday dismissed rumors about his death. He said he remains strong and healthy at 89.

Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta during a colloquium held to celebrate his 89th birthday. The event featured a lecture titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World.”

The former president criticized those spreading a fake letter online. The document allegedly suggested he had written about his impending death.

Obasanjo said the message was false and misleading. He added that those behind the rumor were wasting their time.

Born on March 6, 1937, the elder statesman said he still believes God has a purpose for his life. According to him, his good health at 89 confirms that belief.

He also assured the audience that he remains active and strong.

“I dey Kampe,” Obasanjo said, using a local expression that means he is fine and doing well.

Obasanjo Rejects Fake Letter Circulating Online

The former president spoke further about the fake letter circulating on social media. He said some people falsely credited the document to him.

In his words, “They publish and circulate a fake paper credited to me that I am writing, giving notice of my death.”

He continued, “That is their wish and surely not God’s wish for me.”

Obasanjo said he believes God still has plans for him. He added that his continued strength shows that his life still carries purpose.

He also warned those spreading the rumor. According to him, God will deal with people who wish him harm.

He said, “God has assured me that He has more for me to do on earth, and He has given me the wherewithal to do it.”

The former leader repeated that he remains strong. He again told the audience, “I dey kampe as usual.”

The statement drew applause from guests at the birthday colloquium in Abeokuta.

President Tinubu Salutes His Predecessor

In his goodwill message to his predecessor in office, President Bola Tinubu called Obasanjo a “towering influence” who will continue to make an impact on Nigeria, Africa, and the rest of the world.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president expressed happiness on the 89th birthday of the former president.

Tinubu highlighted the bravery and sacrifices of the elder statesman, noting that he led “troops to protect Nigeria’s unity during the war, spending time in prison for speaking out against unfair rule, and always working for Africa’s political and economic goals.”

President Tinubu praised Obasanjo for “the passion and knowledge he has contributed to Nigeria’s growth through his writings and ongoing involvement, showing a strong love for the country and its development.

He prayed for “many more years of good health, strength, and wisdom for the former president as he continues to help the nation and the world.
