Reports from Israeli and international media say Kurdish rebel groups based in northern Iraq have launched a ground incursion into Iran.
According to the reports, the fighters crossed into Iranian territory in early March. The development comes as tensions rise in the region after recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.
Kurdish officials reportedly told the Associated Press that the United States contacted them before the operation. They said Washington requested their assistance and discussed possible cooperation.
The White House confirmed that former U.S. President Donald Trump had contact with Kurdish leaders on March 1. That contact has led to speculation that Washington may be supporting Kurdish forces rather than sending American troops into Iran.
Reports also suggest that thousands of Kurdish fighters began moving toward Iranian border areas on March 2. They allegedly established positions in several locations near the frontier.

The Kurdish population is estimated at between 30 and 40 million people. They live across Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria.

Despite their large population, the Kurds do not have a sovereign state. Kurdish groups in Iran have long accused Tehran of political repression.
Over the years, several Kurdish factions have joined opposition efforts against the Iranian government.
Rising Military Pressure Around Iran
Reports indicate that the Central Intelligence Agency may be considering plans to supply weapons to Kurdish fighters and other Iranian opposition groups.
Sources cited in the reports said discussions have taken place between U.S. officials, Iraqi Kurdish leaders, and Iranian opposition figures.
The strategy allegedly focuses on supporting local forces rather than deploying American ground troops.
Regional tensions have already intensified in recent weeks.
Late last month, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched drone strikes against Kurdish bases in northern Iraq. The attacks targeted locations believed to host Iranian Kurdish rebel groups.
Those strikes came shortly after earlier military actions by the United States and Israel against Iranian military infrastructure.
Some security observers believe Kurdish fighters could become a major factor in any conflict involving Iran.
Large numbers of trained Kurdish combatants operating inside Iranian territory could increase pressure on the government in Tehran.
