Delays as Cashless Airport Toll Policy Takes Effect, Keyamo Apologises

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has apologised to Nigerians for traffic congestion at airport toll gates after the enforcement of a cashless payment system.

Speaking Sunday night at Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos while receiving the Minister of the Year award from Silverbird Communications Ltd, Keyamo acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the policy.

“Today we went cashless. The policy of this government is to eliminate the collection of cash at our toll gates. It has been the law for many years, and we are now fully implementing it,” he said.

He explained that motorists are expected to use bank-enabled payment cards at designated points to trigger automated barriers. He warned that cash payments would no longer be accepted.

“When you get to the gate, just press your card and the barrier will open. If you come with cash, you will experience embarrassment because nobody will allow you to pass,” he added.

The minister appealed for public cooperation, noting that the cashless system is designed to optimise government revenue, curb corruption, and modernise airport operations.

He urged Nigerians to obtain the required cards before their next airport visit, expressing confidence that initial challenges would ease as compliance improves.

The policy officially commenced on Sunday, leading to traffic congestion at toll gates in major airports.

Officials attributed the disruption to last-minute adjustments by motorists adapting to the new system.
