The National Police Council has confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will now be sent to the Senate for screening.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 25, 2026, after former IGP Kayode Egbetokun resigned. Tinubu later convened the Police Council to formally consider his appointment.

Disu, 59, took office at a brief ceremony at Louis Edet House in Abuja, where Tinubu decorated him.

Until his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

He was promoted to AIG last year. He previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later in Abuja as FCT Commissioner of Police.

Born in Lagos Island on April 13, 1966, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in May 1992.

Over his career, he worked as Divisional Police Officer in Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers States. He also commanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad units in Ondo, Oyo, and Rivers States, and led anti-kidnapping operations.

Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and once headed the Intelligence Response Team, a role previously held by Abba Kyari.

At the handover ceremony, he promised accountable and modern policing. “My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” he said.
