At least nine people have been killed near a US consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, after protests erupted over the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The violence happened early Sunday morning when security forces opened fire on hundreds of pro‑Iranian demonstrators trying to storm the mission.
A police surgeon told reporters that at least nine bodies were brought to Karachi’s civil hospital.
Video clips and pictures shared online show a wounded persons being carried by bystanders and protesters trying to force their way into the US consulate on Mai Kolachi Road.
Large rallies also flared in other cities. In Skardu, in the Shia‑majority Gilgit‑Baltistan region, protesters set fire to a United Nations office building.
Local government spokesperson Shabbir Mir told newsmen that no casualties were reported from the blaze.
In Lahore, hundreds gathered outside the US consulate but there was no major violence. A witness, Aqeel Raza, said some tried to damage a security gate, yet police stopped them without force.
Officials expect a protest near the US embassy in Islamabad’s diplomatic enclave later on Sunday.
Protests also broke out in Iraq and Indian‑administered Kashmir as well.
In Baghdad, hundreds tried to storm the US‑embassy compound despite heavy security.
One masked protester was heard saying, “The martyrdom of Sayyed Ali Khamenei has hurt us” and demanded the withdrawal of US‑led coalition forces from Iraq.
In Srinagar, several thousand Shia Muslims took to the streets, holding red, black, and yellow flags. Many shouted anti‑US and anti‑Israel slogans.
A 40‑year‑old protester, Syed Towfeeq, said “This day we are all very heavy‑hearted. We are mourning our beloved leader who was martyred,” and added that the crowd was sending a message to US President Donald Trump: “We will always stand against your oppression.”
