The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a revised timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
The presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on January 16, while governorship and House of Assembly polls are scheduled for February 6.
INEC also shifted the Osun governorship election from August 8 to August 15.
The earlier timetable had fixed the presidential and governorship elections for March 6, but those dates coincided with Ramadan.
INEC’s statement, signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, said the new schedule complies with the Electoral Act 2026, signed into law on February 19.
“The Commission has reviewed and realigned the Schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework,” Haruna said.
Party primaries will run from April 23 to May 30, 2026.
Campaigns for presidential and National Assembly elections begin August 19, while governorship and state assembly campaigns start September 9.
Campaigns must end 24 hours before election day.
Haruna said the adjustments also affect Ekiti and Osun polls, noting that remaining activities will follow the new law.
He called on stakeholders to cooperate for peaceful and credible elections.
The new timetable has put political parties under pressure. The APC, currently holding congresses, will need to adjust its plans.
The Labour Party’s congresses are due next month, while PDP, ADC, NNPP, and APGA must now finalize their schedules quickly.
