Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has on Friday February 27, announced in a statewide broadcast from Yola his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fintiri said his decision followed “wide consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, and citizens across the state.”
He described the defection as being in the best interest of Adamawa’s future development.
The governor confirmed that all commissioners, elected officials, and political appointees across the state’s 226 wards would also join him in the APC.
He claimed that his defection would strengthen governance, foster unity, and align Adamawa with national development priorities.
The Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Wesley Bathiya, had on Wednesday also resigned his membership of the PDP alongside 14 other lawmakers.
The Speaker made the announcement during plenary, presenting letters of resignation from the affected members.
Mr Fintiri’s defection brings to 31 the number of state governors now in the ruling party, giving them considerable electoral muscle for the much-anticipated general elections next year.
Reactions are already trailing the announcement as supporters and opposition figures weigh its impact on Adamawa’s political balance.
