Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the attack on African Democratic Congress (ADC) members in Edo State, describing it as an internal party dispute that escalated.
On Tuesday, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and ADC leaders were allegedly attacked by suspected thugs.
Obi’s former campaign spokesman, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, called the incident “an assassination attempt.”
In a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, Okpebholo expressed sympathy for those affected. “The importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of party politics remains totally condemned and will not be tolerated,” he said.
The governor insisted he would not allow Edo to slide into chaos. He alleged the attack was meant to discredit the state’s reputation for peace. He advised the ADC to resolve internal disagreements and appealed to residents to remain calm.
Okpebholo directed security agencies to increase surveillance around political gatherings, warning that unrest disguised as party activity would be firmly resisted. “Edo remains a peaceful state, and no one can take that away from us,” he added.
