Human rights lawyer Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has questioned the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Joash Amupitan, to deliver credible elections in 2027.
Speaking Monday on Politics Today, Odinkalu reviewed the recent Federal Capital Territory council elections. “INEC failed. Amupitan’s INEC failed woefully. On this evidence, nobody can trust Joash Amupitan to organise credible elections in 2027,” he said.
He described the problems as administrative failures rather than legal issues. “It is about the failure of will, the failure of electoral administration,” Odinkalu added.
He faulted INEC for poor logistics and for reassigning voters to new polling units without proper notice, which he said disenfranchised many.
The Prof. argued that Amupitan cannot claim inexperience since he had overseen a governorship election in Anambra State.
Mr. Odinkalu challenged INEC to admit mistakes and apologise. “Amupitan can tell Nigerians, ‘I take personal responsibility, this is a chastening experience. I am learning,’” he said.
He also stressed that Nigerians expect commitment to improvement, not perfection, and called for citizens without partisan interests to help fix lapses.
