The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three suspects for unlawful possession of a firearm during a security operation in Idemili North Local Government Area, as part of efforts to curb the circulation of illegal weapons in the state.
The suspects were apprehended by police operatives during a patrol and stop-and-search operation around the Uke axis of Idemili North.
Items recovered from them include a locally fabricated pump-action gun, live cartridges and substances suspected to be hard drugs.
The suspects were identified as Ifeanyi Ibeabuchi (39), Abdullahi Shaibu (26) and Obah Chima (18).
Confirming the arrest in a press statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operation was part of ongoing measures to rid the state of criminal elements.
According to him, the suspects could not provide any legal explanation for possessing the firearm.
“The suspects were arrested during a security operation in Uke, Idemili North Local Government Area. A locally made pump-action gun with live cartridges and suspected illicit drugs were recovered from them,” Ikenga said.
Suspects to be Arraigned in Court
He added that the suspects are currently in police custody and would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
“They will be arraigned in court upon the completion of investigation. The command remains committed to ensuring that those involved in criminal activities are brought to justice,” he stated.
The police spokesman further explained that preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspects are linked to any criminal gang operating in the area.
The command also urged residents to support security agencies with credible information, noting that public cooperation remains vital in tackling crime and improving safety across the state.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its resolve to sustain patrols and intelligence-led operations in flashpoints across the state to prevent criminal activities and ensure the protection of lives and property.
