Nigeria has intensified its partnership with Singapore to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), unveiling plans to introduce a two‑year diploma in Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications across institutions nationwide.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced the initiative after meeting Singapore’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Lim Sim Seng, in Abuja.
“We will collaborate on the development and implementation of a two‑year technical diploma in AI applications across institutions in the country,” Alausa said.
The programme will be developed with support from Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education Education Services (ITEES).
It represents a major shift toward embedding advanced digital skills in Nigeria’s technical education framework, moving beyond traditional vocational trades.
Global Excellence Model
Under the agreement, Nigeria will adopt the Global Excellence Model for Skills Training, a framework used to assess TVET institutions across seven dimensions of excellence.
The partnership also includes leadership development for 40 heads of technical institutions and a Train‑the‑Trainer programme focused on pedagogy and assessment methodology.
Alausa explained that the collaboration will strengthen governance, improve teaching quality, and introduce measurable performance standards for TVET centres nationwide.
The initiative builds on engagements held in Singapore in late 2025, where Nigerian officials toured ITE campuses and discussed expanding cooperation with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Nigeria has already undertaken sweeping reforms in the TVET sector. Curricula have been restructured to focus 80% on practical skills and 20% on theory.
In 2025, the nationwide TVET programme recorded over 90,000 applications in its first week, with entrance exam participation rising nearly 300% compared to the previous year.
Other reforms include stipends for trainees, infrastructure upgrades, and biometric attendance verification systems to enhance transparency and curb fraud.
Singapore is widely regarded as a global model for building a skills‑driven economy through structured vocational pathways and strong industry linkages. Nigeria’s partnership signals intent to align its technical education system with international best practices.
