A 20‑year‑old man, Aliyu Nuhu, sustained a severe head injury in Zaria, Kaduna State, after vigilante members allegedly hammered a five‑inch nail into his skull during interrogation over allegations that he stole a chicken.
His father, Mallam Salisu Nuhu, popularly known as Babande, confirmed the incident, accusing two vigilante members of inflicting the injuries.
“They detained him and interrogated him with severe punishment, to the extent of nailing a five‑inch nail into his head,” Babande said.
Babande explained that he had asked his son to sell a chicken at the market. Instead, Aliyu was arrested by vigilantes who suspected theft.
He said the vigilantes demanded ₦5,000 as bail but later released the boy when he could not pay.
It was only after returning home that Babande noticed injuries on his son’s head. Aliyu then revealed that a nail had been driven into his skull.
Medical Treatment
The family rushed him back to the vigilante office and then to a nearby chemist. The chemist referred them to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika.
Doctors required a police report before treatment could begin. Babande said the nail remained lodged in his son’s head for 13 days before it was surgically removed.
The family spent more than ₦800,000 on medical bills.
Aliyu identified one of the suspects as Nuhu Dan Banga, saying: “He hammered the nail into my head during interrogation. I lost consciousness during the torture.”
Divisional Police Officer of Zaria City Division, Nura Abubakar, confirmed the incident. He said one suspect had been arrested while another remained at large.
Abubakar assured that the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations were concluded.
