The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the political crisis in Rivers State is close to a final resolution.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday after inspecting ongoing projects, Wike credited President Bola Tinubu’s intervention as decisive in resolving the problems between the state’s executive and legislative arms.
“I believe that by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue and that this will be the last time the Rivers people will need to hear this kind of discord,” Wike said.
He described Tinubu as a unifying figure whose leadership was essential in restoring peace.
“The president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and do the needful to ensure peace and progress,” he added.
Wike outlined expectations for both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
“The House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and I am confident that the governor will also carry out the acts required of him to ensure this peace is sustainable,” he said.
He said that stability must now be the priority. “The most important thing is for Rivers State to move forward, and we are grateful to Mr President for his tireless commitment to ensuring that we reach this understanding,” Wike noted.
The Rivers State House of Assembly, known to be loyal to Wike, had again recently initiated impeachment moves against Governor Fubara. The crisis has been threatening governance in the oil-rich state.
On Monday, President Tinubu summoned both Wike and Fubara to the Presidential Villa in Abuja to mediate the feud. The meeting produced a truce, with both sides expected to honor commitments that will stabilize the state.
The resolution is critical for Rivers State, a hub of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, where political instability could affect national revenue, and which is a also a major voting bloc often decisive in who wins Nigeria’s presidential elections.
