The Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) in Katsina has awarded a posthumous honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science to former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
The honour, approved by the university’s Governing Council, was presented during the institution’s 14th convocation ceremony held on Saturday in Katsina.
University authorities said the award was in recognition of Buhari’s lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s political development, his leadership vision, and dedication to national unity.
They highlighted his contributions to strengthening the tertiary education sector, noting that his legacy made him deserving of the posthumous recognition.
The institution explained that the decision was also intended to encourage reflection on Buhari’s strides in governance and nation-building, describing them as a guide and source of inspiration for present and future leaders.
Speaking on behalf of other award recipients, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmad Rufa’i, urged graduating students to uphold patriotism, integrity, and selfless service.
“Channel your education toward building an inclusive society where citizens can live with dignity, peace, and equal opportunities,” Rufa’i advised.
The convocation ceremony featured the award of degrees and diplomas to students across various faculties.
Other distinguished Nigerians were also conferred with honorary awards in recognition of their contributions to national development, as the university celebrated academic excellence and leadership.
