U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a major national prayer event to mark America’s 250th anniversary, announcing that the National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving will take place on May 17, 2026, at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Trump made the announcement during remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast on February 5, where he highlighted his administration’s efforts to bring religion back into the public arena.
“To support this exciting renewal, this morning I’m pleased to announce that on May 17, 2026, we’re inviting Americans from all across the country to come together on our National Mall to pray, to give thanks,” Trump said.
“We’re going to rededicate America as one nation under God,” he added, drawing long applause from attendees.
“America Prays” Initiative
The prayer event is part of Trump’s broader “America Prays” initiative, launched earlier this year ahead of the semi quincentennial celebrations.
The White House released a 22-page document highlighting the Christian roots of the nation, including historical prayers, sermons, and presidential proclamations.
Trump said the country is experiencing a resurgence of faith, pointing to increased Bible sales in 2025 and higher attendance among young people at religious services.
A White House spokesperson cited a Barna Group study showing that millennial and Generation Z Christians are attending services at higher rates, underscoring what Trump described as a spiritual renewal.
The president also announced new guidance from the U.S. Department of Education aimed at protecting religious speech and prayer in public schools.
Trump acknowledged that the policy could face legal challenges but told the crowd: “We’ll win it.”
He said the guidance is part of his administration’s commitment to safeguarding religious freedom and ensuring that faith remains central to American life.
The National Jubilee of Prayer is expected to draw thousands of participants from across the country.
Trump said the event will serve as a symbolic rededication of the nation’s founding principles and a celebration of unity under God.
