Nigeria Customs Hands Over ₦4.7 Billion Seized Cannabis to NDLEA

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tincan Island Command, has intercepted and handed over 2,366 packs of cannabis indica valued at more than ₦4.7 billion to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Lagos.

The illicit drugs were discovered inside a 40-foot container during routine enforcement operations at the Tincan Island Port.

Customs Area Controller Comptroller Frank Onyeka disclosed the seizure in a statement issued by command spokesperson CSC Oscar Ivara on Wednesday.

“A 40-foot container was discovered to contain 2,366 packs of cannabis indica concealed in 55 jumbo bags,” Onyeka said.

He explained that the inspection, carried out on January 28, was based on intelligence-led profiling and conducted in collaboration with operatives of the NDLEA and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Officials also found a Colt MK IV .45 calibre pistol with an empty magazine hidden inside the container.

Further checks revealed that three used vehicles—a Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota Matrix—were used to conceal the prohibited items.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Onyeka confirmed that one suspect had been arrested in connection with the seizure.

“Interestingly, we apprehended one suspect linked to this seizure,” he said, adding that investigations were ongoing.

The Customs boss stressed that the service would not tolerate drug trafficking or any form of transnational crime that threatens national security and public health.

“Our actions align with global standards on border protection and public safety, in line with the 2026 International Customs Day theme of vigilance and commitment,” Onyeka added.

Receiving the seized drugs, NDLEA Commander at Tincan Island, Solomon Omotoso, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its professionalism and effective inter-agency collaboration.

Omotoso assured that the NDLEA would intensify investigations and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
