Atletico Madrid Seal £30.3m Deal for Ademola Lookman

Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman from Italian side Atalanta in a transfer worth £30.3 million.

The move strengthens Diego Simeone’s attacking options as the club pushes for success in La Liga and Europe.

Lookman’s arrival makes history. He becomes the first English-born footballer to play in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and now La Liga. Only 21 players have featured across England, Germany, Italy, and Spain, while just three—Christian Poulsen, Justin Kluivert, and Stevan Jovetic—have appeared in all five of Europe’s top leagues, including France’s Ligue 1.

“This is a new chapter, and I’m ready to give everything for Atletico Madrid,” Lookman said in a post shared after arriving in Spain.

Since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022, Lookman revitalized his career in Italy. He scored 55 goals and provided 27 assists, becoming a fan favorite in Bergamo.

His most iconic moment came in 2024 when he netted a hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, delivering Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy.

That same year, he was crowned African Footballer of the Year and finished 14th on the Ballon d’Or shortlist, the only African player named.

Born in London, the 28-year-old represented England at youth level and won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. He switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2022 and has since become a key figure for the Super Eagles.

Atletico Madrid’s Ambitions

Atletico Madrid, currently third in La Liga and ten points behind leaders Barcelona, announced the deal on transfer deadline day.

Lookman signed a long-term contract that runs until June 2030.

The Spanish giants also confirmed the signing of Obed Vargas, a 20-year-old Mexican midfielder from Seattle Sounders.

Vargas, born in Alaska, made his MLS debut at 15 and has already won the Concacaf Champions League and Leagues Cup.

Atletico fans have reacted strongly to Lookman’s arrival, with many interpreting his social media post as a bold statement ahead of crucial fixtures.

Will Lookman’s move to Madrid elevate Atletico’s attack to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid, or will the Nigerian star face the same struggles that have tested many forwards under Simeone’s demanding system?
