Rivers State Police Command Warn of Fake Officers Extorting Residents

The Rivers State Police Command has issued a strong security advisory, alerting residents to the activities of unidentified individuals posing as police officers to extort unsuspecting members of the public.

In a statement released Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adewole Adepoju, ordered immediate measures to track, arrest, and prosecute those involved in the illegal scheme.

“The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a disturbing trend, where a group of individuals portraying as Police Officers, wearing black attire, and engaging in the extortion of unsuspecting citizens in the State,” the statement read.

Adepoju described the development as deeply concerning and confirmed that a robust mechanism has been launched to identify and apprehend the suspects.

Advisory Against Illegal Searches

The Command emphasized that no individual, regardless of claimed affiliation, has the authority to conduct searches of personal devices such as phones or laptops at checkpoints.

“It is imperative to note that no individual has the authority to demand that you accompany them to withdraw or transfer cash from a POS operator or any financial institution,” the statement added.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or hostile checkpoints using the following hotlines:

The Rivers State Police Command reassured citizens of its commitment to maintaining law and order. It appealed for cooperation and support for legitimate police operations aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
