Qatar Stars League side Al Ahli SC have officially announced the signing of former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, in what is being described as a major boost to their defensive line.

The 32-year-old centre-back joins the Doha-based club from Saudi Arabian outfit Al Kholood, signing a deal that will keep him at Al Ahli until June 2028.

He has been handed his preferred number five jersey, a symbolic choice that reflects his leadership role and long-standing identity on the pitch.

Troost-Ekong expressed his excitement about the move in a post on social media, writing: “Next Chapter! Happy to be here part of the @ahliqat family!”

His message signals optimism and determination to contribute to the club’s ambitions.

Career at Al Kholood

During his time in Saudi Arabia, Troost-Ekong made 49 appearances, scoring twice and providing defensive stability.

His leadership qualities were widely acknowledged, with teammates and coaches praising his ability to organise the backline and inspire younger players.

Al Ahli SC view his arrival as a significant reinforcement as they aim to build momentum and finish the season strongly.

The club has been working to strengthen its squad, and Troost-Ekong’s experience at both international and club levels is expected to be invaluable.

His presence is anticipated to bring:

  • Defensive organisation and resilience.
  • Leadership qualities honed from captaining Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
  • Experience across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, adding depth to the squad’s tactical options.

Troost-Ekong’s move to Qatar reflects the growing appeal of the Stars League, which has attracted several high-profile players in recent years.

His signing is also seen as part of Al Ahli’s strategy to compete more effectively in domestic and regional competitions.
