Trump Threatens Tariffs on French Wine Over “Board of Peace”

US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne after France signaled it would decline his invitation to join a new international body called the “Board of Peace.”

The board was initially conceived to oversee the rebuilding of Gaza, but its draft charter suggests a broader mandate beyond the Palestinian territory.

“I’ll put a 200 percent tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join,” Trump said, referring to French President Emmanuel Macron.

The French President Macron is said to have said he “does not intend to answer favorably” to the invitation. The government of France has not issued an official statement, but it is unlikely Paris will participate in the Trump’s initiative.

The situation highlights growing tension between Washington and Paris, particularly as Trump links trade penalties to political cooperation.

Putin Also Invited

Trump confirmed that he had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the Board of Peace. “Yes, he’s been invited,” Trump told a reporter in Florida after Moscow reported the invitation earlier Monday.

The inclusion of Russia raises questions about the board’s composition and its credibility as a peace-building platform, especially given Moscow’s ongoing conflicts.

The Board of Peace was announced by Trump last week as part of his 20-point plan to end the Gaza conflict. While the body’s stated purpose is reconstruction and stability in Gaza, its charter outlines a wider role in conflict resolution and post-war governance.

The board would be chaired by Trump and include heads of state as members.

Countries contributing more than $1 billion in cash during the first year would reportedly secure permanent seats.
