Authorities in Indiana, United States, are investigating after Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, were shot and injured at their home in Lafayette on Sunday.

Police said the incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. at the couple’s residence on Mill Pond Lane. Judge Meyer, 66, sustained an arm injury, while Kimberly Meyer was shot in the hip. Both were taken to a local hospital and remain in stable condition.

According to emergency dispatch audio obtained by CBS, a 911 caller reported that someone knocked on the door claiming to have the couple’s dog. Moments later, a shot was fired through the door.

Investigators recovered shell casings at the scene. As of Sunday evening, the suspect had not been apprehended, and police have not released details about a possible motive or description.

Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush expressed concern over the attack.

“I am deeply grateful Judge Meyer and his wife Kim are alive after having been shot in their home. Their health and well-being are of utmost concern to me,” she said.

Rush added: “Any violence against a judge or a judge’s family is completely unacceptable. As public servants, you are dedicated to the rule of law.”

Kimberly Meyer also issued a statement, saying she has “great confidence” in the police investigation and thanked the medical personnel and community for their support.

Rush urged residents to remain vigilant and contact local authorities with any information.

Judge Meyer, who has served on the bench for 12 years, recently announced plans to retire at the end of 2026.
