Osborne Umahi, the eldest son of the Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator David Umahi, has officially entered the race for the chairmanship of Ohaozara Local Government Area under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He obtained his nomination form on Friday at the party’s secretariat in Abakaliki, ahead of the forthcoming council elections in the state.
Osborne is among the aspirants endorsed by Governor Francis Nwifuru as APC candidates across the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi.
Reacting to the governor’s support, Senator Umahi described the endorsement of his son as “the height of appreciation,” pointing to their long-standing political relationship.
Arriving at the APC secretariat with a crowd of supporters and well-wishers, Osborne declined to speak with journalists after purchasing the form.
However, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Francis Ori, expressed confidence in his leadership potential.
“He is a chip off the old block and will replicate his father’s achievements in Ebonyi as a former governor and now as a minister in Nigeria. The people are solidly behind him and will demonstrate that support at the polls,” Ori said.
Political Context
The alliance between Senator Umahi and Governor Nwifuru stretches back to 2008, when Umahi served as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State and Nwifuru was an ex officio member.
Umahi later became governor in 2015 and played a pivotal role in Nwifuru’s rise as Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.
Ahead of the 2023 governorship election, Umahi openly declared that he “fought battles” to ensure Nwifuru succeeded him as governor, underscoring the depth of their political partnership.
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) is expected to release the official timetable for the council polls in the coming days, as political activities intensify across the state.
