Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former presidential aspirant from Enugu State, has announced his resignation from the ruling party.
In a letter addressed to the APC chairman of the Owelli/Amoli/Ugbo/Ogugu ward in Awgu Local Government Area, Ogbonnia said his decision followed extensive consultation with family and political allies, as well as reflection on Nigeria’s current political realities.
Ogbonnia recalled joining the APC with hopes of driving positive change and national development, but said recent events had made continued membership “untenable and unbearable.”
He cited:
- Undemocratic practices within the party
- Imposition of leaders
- Marginalisation of loyal members
- Vendetta politics
According to him, these practices have stifled internal participation and growth.
Criticism of APC and Tinubu
Ogbonnia accused the APC of attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state by “deploying underhand practices to stifle the opposition.” He also criticised the sidelining of youths in federal appointments, describing it as disregard for the future generation.
In a strongly worded statement, he accused President Bola Tinubu of running a failed government:
“Tinubu’s inhumane leadership, where he had remained nonchalant to severe security challenges ravaging the country, has compromised national sovereignty and made Nigeria vulnerable to neocolonial foreign military interventions.”
He described Tinubu as “a failed president who is a pariah among Nigeria’s allies in the international system” and condemned plans to re-nominate him as APC’s candidate for the 2027 elections, calling it “a gross insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians.”
Ogbonnia’s resignation comes amid a wave of defections in Nigeria’s political space, with lawmakers, governors, and other politicians switching allegiance to the APC.
His departure could be taken as a sign of growing discontent among some founding members who believe the party has strayed from its original vision.
Despite his criticisms, Ogbonnia extended appreciation to the APC and wished the party well in the future.
He did not indicate what his next political move will be or where his affiliation will shift to. However, in recent times, since the defection of the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party seems to have picked momentum and seen some high-profile defections to its ranks.
