Europol Arrests 10 Nigerians in Black Axe Crackdown

Europol has confirmed the arrest of 34 suspects, including 10 Nigerian nationals, in a sweeping operation against the notorious international criminal organization known as Black Axe.

The coordinated action, led by the Spanish National Police with support from German authorities, marks one of the most significant disruptions to the group’s European operations.

According to Europol, “The action resulted in 34 arrests and significant disruptions to the group’s activities. The core group of arrested suspects includes 10 Nigerian nationals.”

Most of the arrests were made in Seville, while others took place in Madrid, Málaga, and Barcelona. Investigators also froze €119,352 in bank accounts and seized €66,403 in cash during house searches across Spain.

A Global Network Under Pressure

Black Axe, formally linked to the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, is described as a highly structured organisation with a presence in dozens of countries.

Europol said the group is involved in cyber-enabled fraud, drug trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution, kidnapping, armed robbery, and fraudulent spiritual practices.

The network relied heavily on money mules, often recruited from economically vulnerable communities, including Spanish nationals, to move illicit funds and conceal fraud proceeds.

The crackdown was enabled by intelligence sharing, real-time coordination, and the deployment of German officers to Spain during the action phase.

Europol stressed that the arrests were designed to dismantle the group’s leadership, disrupt its financial networks, and seize criminal assets.

With thousands of members and affiliated facilitators worldwide, Black Axe has long been considered one of Africa’s most dangerous transnational crime organisations.

The arrest in Spain is expected to weaken its European operations.
